Bob Kennedy Workout Week continues with the second to final workout performed by Kennedy before he competed at the 1996 Olympic Games in the 5,000m.
Kennedy was running about 60 - 70 miles a week of volume during the summer of 1996 with an average of three track workouts per week and the absence of a long run.
I think it is key to keep in mind that no one session during his summer of training in 1996 was incredible, rather it was the fact that he hit the track every other day and kept grinding away, step by step, without injury or illness, which is impressive.
He was the best American distance runner of his generation, and is still one of the best ever, so seeing him enjoy success with a training load which, at this time, focused on quality over quantity of work is a refreshing reminder that there are many paths to Rome.
