Context & Details

Alan smashed this workout a week before he won the always competitive 2010 San Jose Turkey Trot 5K road race in 13:36.

Alan worked with 5 different coaches during his professional career who each had contrasting preparation styles. But the training philosophy was never the distinguishing agent. It was always Alan. He brought something extra to the table and is why he was capable of the remarkable.

When looking at the arc of workouts throughout Alan's career, what stands out most is a pattern of utter greatness. What he could do in practice and then races is amazing. It is stuff few, save his coaches and he, could even dream of attempting.

This workout, and the 13:36 victory on the road 6 days later, are another shred of evidence that what American distance running enjoyed during Alan's prime was something truly unrepeatable.
