Quote of the Day — Never Give Up

“Never give up. Never let them count you out. Play the game like the greats play, right down to the last move.” — RZA

One of my favorite books is the Tao of the Wu by the RZA. As a fan of eastern philosophy, I really like how RZA translates tapestry of Buddhist, samurai and Taoist truths for a contemporary audience.

Sport is a game, like chess. The most important thing to realize that the problems which happen in the game are not problems with you. We tend to experience suffering and loss when we over self-identify as something other than who we are. If the label “runner,” “coach,” or “musician,” etc. is you, not something you do, then you’ll be at a loss for meaning when those areas of your life are not going well. We need to be able to separate what happens in the game from what happens to ourselves. Your value is not tied to your personal best or how many champions you’ve coached. Your value is the fact that you’re here and a participant in the greater game of life.
