What Mike Smith of Northern Arizona University Told His 10,000m Runners

Down at Day 1 of the 2018 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, my friend Mike Smith, Head Coach of Northern Arizona University Cross Country / Track & Field program, saw two of his Lumberjack runners finish 4th and 5th in the Men's 10,000.

His runners were disappointed with their placing. Of course, they wanted to go 1-2, but they led the majority of the 25 laps and pressed hard in the middle to make it an honest race.

Afterwards, Mike had this say to them, "Guys, I know you're disappointed. But remember, how we do it matters just as much as what we do."

As usual, in the chaotic environment of a national championship meet, Mike found the teachable moment and offered it up as a ripe gift for his athlete's growth. And that knowledge is far more valuable than any trophies won or lost.
