14 Qualities of a Good Coach
Everyone needs a good coach.
A good coach can help in so many ways and have an important part in helping an athlete achieve their goals.
There are many qualities a good coach must possess. Here are 14 qualities:
1. A good coach must be compassionate, thoughtful, and imaginative.
2. A good coach acts as a tutor initially, and over time eventually allows the athlete to introduce ideas into their own training plan.
3. A good coach must have sound technical and practical knowledge in all aspects of their sport.
4. A good coach must be able to communicate their knowledge and experience to the athlete effectively.
5. A good coach and athlete eventually become a team and share in all aspects of training and proper direction for living in concert with the athlete’s goals.
6. A good coach must be able to assess ability and determine a person’s potential.
7. A good coach should inspire, motivate, and lead the athlete in training and competition planning.
8. A good coach never uses athletes to further their own reputation.
9. A good coach must be honest at all times so athletes can trust their decisions.
10. An athlete must respect the coach’s experience and judgment just as a good coach must respect the athlete’s ability and determination.
11. A good coach and athlete must get along well, both in and outside the context of sport. It is vital to be able to share a good laugh together as well as discuss the technical aspects of the sport.
12. A good coach should be a teacher and advocate of the athlete and direct their improvement. The coach must be positive and constructive with critiques of the athlete’s ability.
13. A good coach must be enthusiastic and easy to talk to. This enthusiasm should be infectious and spur an enthused approach to preparation for competition in the athlete.
14. Above all, if a good coach can help an athlete get better, so can an athlete help a coach get better.
