Often we believe our competency to be greater than it really is — this due to the overconfidence effect.

Thus, to safeguard, it is best to be sharply honest about the scale by which thyself is measured. If some proficiency is possessed, one seems meticulous compared to an amateur. However, compared to a master, a slob. Whatever is decided to be the minimum level of acceptability becomes the standard of excellence. 

By going all in, the bar is automatically raised. 

Remember, the journey toward mastery is a seemingly endless road. But the destination is not the point. It is each step on the path, and the standard you choose to hold yourself, which makes you better.
