Strive to be Solid, not Spectacular

“Hitting home runs gets you headlines — hitting singles & doubles get you hardware. Headlines fade fast, hardware lasts.” | Mike Smith, Director of Cross Country and Track & Field, Northern Arizona Univ.

One rarely reaches their goal in a single step. Winners know the path to victory is not unlike the combination of a safe. One turn of the knob doesn’t unlock the treasure. Instead the path to the podium is a long series of uncelebrated, small steps strung together over days, weeks, months, and years.

Winners know what they want. They stay true to themselves — and their teammates — by always keeping their goals in focus. This allows them to resist the seductions of distraction that can derail them from achieving their goals. Winners have no problem getting the job done with little fanfare — because they know final result will not be ignored or easily forgotten.

“Work hard in silence, let your success be your noise.” | Frank Ocean
